Frequently Asked Questions About Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive approach that releases restrictions deep in the body to alleviate pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and well being. It was established and developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger. Using a light touch - about the weight of a nickel - practitioners facilitate the release of restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to enhance resistance to disease, and it is helpful for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

How does Craniosacral Therapy Work?

Few structures wield as much influence over the body's proper functioning as the brain and spinal cord, which together comprise the central nervous system. This system, in turn, is significantly impacted by the craniosacral system—comprised of membranes and fluid that envelop, safeguard, and nourish the brain and spinal cord.

On a daily basis, your body contends with stresses and strains that it must compensate for. Regrettably, these adaptations often lead to tightening and distortion of the craniosacral system. These distortions can generate tension around the brain and spinal cord, resulting in restrictions. Such limitations can impede the central nervous system's healthy operation and potentially disrupt the functioning of every other system it interacts with.

How is a Craniosacral treatment given?

The client remains fully clothed on a massage table. Employing a gentle touch, a CST practitioner evaluates the craniosacral system by delicately palpating different areas of the body to assess the fluid motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid circulating around the brain and spinal cord. Each position is held for approximately three to ten minutes depending on how many restrictions are at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts around 60-90 minutes.

What does a treatment feel like?

Utilizing light touch, a Craniosacral treatment usually feels very relaxing and many clients fall asleep. CST restores balance in the craniosacral system so that the body can heal itself.  Clients often report feeling refreshed and peaceful after receiving a session.
